KL Rahul gets the much awaited axe, Shubman Gill called up for Test series vs South Africa

Out of form opener, KL Rahul has been dropped from the Indian Test team for the next test series vs South Africa.

Shubman Gill has earned his call-up in the Test side after scoring prolifically in list A. Regular ODI opener Rohit Sharma will be given the same role in Tests as well, which was confirmed by the chairman of selectors MSK Prasad.

Also, fast bowler, Umesh Yadav doesn't find a place in the squad as India have reduced the squad to just 15 players for the upcoming series. There were no other surprises or changes in the Indian side for these 3 Test matches. Ranked no.1 in the ICC Test rankings, India is also the points table toppers in the World Test Championship with 120 points after trouncing West Indies in both matches.

India had lost to South Africa marginally 1-2 the last time these two teams met in early 2018. However, India had won the 4 Test series 3-0 against South Africa at home in 2015 - that was Virat Kohli's first full Test series as captain. Mayank Agarwal and Hanuma Vihari who debuted in the Test series against Australia and England respectively, have come along well for India.

While Agarwal has been brave as an opener and struck vital fifties against Aussies and windies, Vihari had an excellent series in the West Indies and also showed good stints in previous two series and even hit his maiden hundred in Test cricket after falling for 93 in the 1st Test.
