Looking at the pace of evolution around us, and the weirder things that we keep discovering these days, there might be one day, when we would actually be in danger from an asteroid attack. Many science fictions have already shown us a picture of what it shall look like! but ever imagined if that happens in real, are we safe?
The answer to this question is yet not clear, but will soon be clear when this week, NASA, FEMA and their scientific partners, around the world put in all their acquired knowledge of their lives, decades of research into work as they work to simulate the full-scale asteroid impact scenario. This would help to test the communication between scientists, government entities, and disaster response teams in a full-fledged, well-designed exercise, that could help save countless lives in the event of an actual asteroid strike.
- NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office
- ESA’s Space Situational Awareness group
- International Asteroid Warning Network
would be put to test during the unreal simulation and they shall be working in coordination to help devise some means to stay safe from the asteroid attacks.
Lindley Johnson, NASA’s Planetary Defense Officer, said in a statement,
"These exercises have really helped us in the planetary defence community to understand what our colleagues on the disaster management side need to know. This exercise will help us develop more effective communications with each other and with our governments."
This mock event should be as real as possible in order to devise full-prove mechanisms and methods to conquer the asteroid attack. This might feel silly at some point in time, but, you never know how a plan will play out until you see it in action, and exercises like this one could one day save many lives.
