The Delhi High Court granted bail to Jamia Coordination Committee Media Coordinator Safoora Zargar on Tuesday, who was arrested in a case related to communal violence in Northeast-Delhi after Solicitor General (SG) Tushar Mehta said that he has no objection to her release on purely humanitarian grounds.
She was arrested by Delhi Police’s Special Cell on April 10 and is facing a UAPA case in connection with the North-east Delhi riots. The 27-year-old is pregnant and she had raised pregnancy as one of the grounds of her relief.
Justice Rajiv Shakdher ordered her release from Tihar Jail and directed her to furnish a bail of Rs 10,000 with a surety of the like amount. After hearings in the court, she was granted bail with certain conditions, directing her not to leave the national capital but in case the petitioner requires to leave the national capital, she will have to seek the permission of the concerned court.
It also directed her to remain in touch with the Investigating Officer on his mobile phone at least every 15 days and also directed to refrain from influencing or hampering the ongoing investigation of the case. Earlier, the Delhi Police in their status reported on Monday in the High Court that Zargar’s pregnancy can’t be the grounds of getting bail and had submitted that “39 deliveries have taken place in Delhi prisons in the last 10 years”.
