India’s COVID-19 numbers are on a surge. India has now surpassed Spain’s tally to become the fifth-worst hit nation by COVID-19, according to the data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. As of now, the total number of confirmed cases in India stands at 243,733 as opposed to Spain's figures of 240,978. Earlier today, India had registered a record of the highest single-day spike of 9.887 cases overtaking Italy’s tally of a number of confirmed cases. India's death toll due to COVID-19 rose to 6,642, with a record increase of 294 deaths in the last 24 hours till Saturday 8 am. The country has registered over 9,000 cases for the third day in a row. Maharashtra is the worst-affected state in the country with over 80,000 cases and is followed by Tamil Nadu and Delhi.

However, contrary to these numbers, there is a downfall in the national growth rate of the infection. From the last few days, it’s been seen that the national growth rate has slowed down by more than half a percentage point during this time. Thus, national reports say that despite the increase in cases, there is a downfall in growth rate.

After almost 2 months of lockdown, India has decided to unlock it now and call for all business activities to normalize. From June 8, shopping malls, religious places, markets, restaurants, hotels will also reopen with proper guidelines and precautions. But in present times, there is a much worrying situation that there is a call for unlocking at a time when cases are surging. Although, that’s also correct that a country cannot remain locked up for such a long period of time but for now the future seems to be a little uncertain and unpredictable for India.
